Garcia endorses State Sen. Paula Sandoval as replacement for city council seat

From the Denver Post http://blogs.denverpost.com/th...

Denver Councilman Rick Garcia has waded into the race that will determine who will replace him in representing northwest Denver by endorsing State Sen. Paula Sandoval.

In a signed letter that the Sandoval campaign will mail to 7,000 households in Council District 1, Garcia announces his endorsement. In the letter, Garcia states: "I believe Paula will continue to represent Northwest Denver as well as she has for the past eight years as your state Senator."

The letter goes on to state that Sandoval was raised in the projects of West Denver by a single mother, and that she paid her way through the University of Colorado where she received a master's degree in public administration. It also stresses the business, Tamales La Casita, she and her husband, Paul, established.

The letter also touts legislation Sandoval pushed as a Democrat in the state legislature to lower the the cost of heating bills, to expand access to school breakfasts and lunches and to improve access to health care for children.

"Throughout her years in the senate and as a business owner in Northwest Denver, Paula has voted with her heart and her head," Garcia adds in the letter. "She listens to both sides of an issue and then decides what is best for her constituency and the city as a whole."

Garcia's seat became vacant when Garcia left to take a job as regional director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The special all-mail ballot election to replace him is scheduled for May 4. The race has attracted several candidates, ranging from a Denver police detective to a civil rights lawyer.

North Denver Speculation

by: Denver Pols

Wed Mar 04, 2009 at 10:07:17 AM MST

From 5280.com:

Denver City Councilman Rick Garcia is in the running to become regional director at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. If he gets the job, his departure from the city council would force a special election later this year and could set off a far-reaching game of political musical chairs...

...If Garcia leaves, state Senator Paula Sandoval says she would "seriously consider" running to replace him on council-though she says it's "all speculation" until Garcia gets the HUD job.

With Sandoval prohibited from running again because of term limits, two state representatives are already looking at taking a stab at her seat: Jerry Frangas and Joel Judd. Judd has already filed to run in 2010 and says he'll seek to be appointed to Sandoval's seat if she leaves early. Frangas says he'll take a look at his options after the legislature adjourns in May.

Lucia Guzman, director of Human Rights and Community Relations for the city of Denver, is also said to be interested in Sandoval's seat.
