Marcia Johnson won't seek re-election

by: Dan Willis

Tue Jun 29, 2010 at 05:42:10 AM MST

On Monday, Councilwoman Marica Johnson announced she will not seek re-election. She cited the fact she will be 70 by the time the next term starts and she wishes to spend more time with her family and do some travelling.

Her district includes most of East Denver (E of Colorado Blvd) from Montclair Neighborhood to Cherry Creek Drive. This also covers Lowry and the Windsor Gardens area.

It will be interesting to see who pops up to run for her seat now.

On a personal note, I would like to wish Marcia all the best. We became friendly competitors in the two times I ran for Denver Election Commissioner, and she won both times (1995 & 1999)

Potential candidates
I know discussion is rare on this board, but hopefully this will spur some.

Who has ideas about potential candidates for the seat being vacated by Marcia Johnson?

Some political names who I can think of who live in the district are below:

Joyce Foster - I have heard rumors she may not seek re-election for her senate seat in 2012. However, I suspect she is looking more for retirement rather than a return to the council.

Lino Lipinsky de Orloff - Diana DeGette's husband. Surely his law practice is more lucretive than city council, but now that his daughters are grown he may be looking to enter the poltical field heiself. Or maybe not.

JD Postal - Former DNC Member. I forget exactly what he does for a living but I think it is in finance. Not sure if it something he could juggle with city council or not. He was a pretty strong political name not too long ago so he may be looking at the job.

Ken Gordon - He has never struck me as a detail-oriented person. That would be a necessity for city council as the issues under their purvue typically deal with contracts and/or zoning. But there have been several other former legislators who went on to city council.

This would make sense for Gordon
He's been itching to get back into politics somehow, and this is really the most logical option in the near future.
